Zachary has been very sick since last Thursday.
On Wednesday he had a sedated MRI which was difficult for him. It took a lot longer than planned.
Thursday he went in for IV fluids and went home.
Still not feeling really well! Friday he was okay, but had a hard time taking his feeds. WELL...Friday night we were up all night long and Saturday decided to take him to Kaiser and we were admitted. They wanted to make sure he wasn't going to get dehydrated.
YIKES--He wasn't getting better and on Monday they took an X-RAY and figured out that he had pneumonia. Or so they thought...
He wasn't responding to the antibiotics and he was getting worse, so we were transferred to Santa Clara Kaiser and placed in the PICU. As of yesterday they decided to change his antibiotic meds and put him on oxygen and tons of pain killers. They decided that today they would do surgery to insert a chest tube to drain the fluid.
However, this is Zachary and nothing is that simple....
The simple two hour surgery took over seven hours.
Zachary did not have pneumonia when they went in to clear his lungs they noticed that there wasn't really any fluid in his lungs--but something "an object" that shouldn't be there. After a little more looking his surgeon said he "stumped her" she called and asked our permission to "cut him open" and figure out where this object was coming from. We agreed and told her to do whatever she thought was necessary for him to get better.
AFTER LOTS OF WORK...
They figured out (never happened before) that he had a 7mm hole in his diaphram and 1/4 of his stomach and his omentum had pushed through this hole on his left side. Well not a surprise, that shadow and "OBJECT" was actually part of his stomach that was misplaced and "dying" in the wrong place. It landed in his chest which compressed his lung and that was why he wasn't able to breathe. They had to take out 1/4 of his stomach all of his omentum. In order to make sure that they got the infected/dying part of his stomach they had to put stitches internally in his stomach. He just went under MAJOR surgery. He is on a ventilator to help him breathe, a chest tube to get rid of any infection and help his lung heal, he has several incisions, and TWO central lines---in order to give him nutrition since he can't eat while his whole body heals. He also had a blood transfusion since his body was "shutting down." He right now has over 10 machines and antibiotics working to help him recover. He is sedated in order to recover and still on a ventilator. It is amazing, but SHOCKING. He made it through again the next 24-48 hours are critical.
This is the hardest thing in the world to see. He was suppose to come out with a chest tube and a PIC line. He came out with tons of tubes, incisions and a major surgery. He is comfortable, but we still have a long way to go. We are suppose to be here for a week or more while his body heals. The doctor said if an adult had this they would of been in so much pain they wouldn't of moved, but Zachary did. They think that this has been in the wrong place for close to three months.
I will take another week off of work to be with him. Adam is taking time off here and there! Keep us in your thoughts and prayers.
