Zachary is all smiles---with the help of some serious pain meds!! He is awake :)
NO TUBE :)Yesterday was a HUGE day for Zachary!
At around 11am he was taken off the vent!!! He had a rough time getting his breathing under control in the beginning. He is on some oxygen through is nose right now, and that is keeping his numbers under control. In order for him to be "awake" enough for him to breathe on his own they had to stop all sedation medication---which means he is awake!!!
I can't explain my feelings when I saw he was awake, and I got to look at his big eyes staring back at me! He can't talk yet, due to the fact that his vocal cords are still very sore. He does reach is arms out towards me and want me to hold his hand frequently. I just keep rubbing his hands and head and tell him to rest, but you know Zach that really isn't his plan. He is actually going through some small "withdrawals" from the high doses of narcotics he was on. Yes, a two year old going through withdrawals---shakes, diarrhea, and jumpy!
Although he is off the ventilator that is one small step in his recovery! Now we have to ween him off the oxygen, the pain meds, let his stomach stitch line fully heal, remove the chest tube, be fever free for over 24 hours, tolerate feeds through his g/j tube, and make sure the diaphragm patch is in place! His body just needs time to rest and heal, and that is what he is doing. Hopefully, when his chest tube is out then I can hold him in my arms.
Again, I know this might sound redundant---thanks to everyone! This is something so hard to deal with that every ones kindness and support is what is helping our family get through this tough time.
